This apple crumble/crisp is absolutely delish

I love apples. I love sugar. I love cinnamon. I love butter. I love just the right amount of crumble. I think you’re probably picking up on a theme here. Now, a lot of people think of this dessert with oats and nuts. You know what I don’t love? Oats and nuts. However, you can add oats and nuts if you desire which is why I’m calling it apple crumble…or crisp. I can confirm it’s still delicious either way. Oh, and it’s super easy. Add some caramel and vanilla ice cream on top and you’ll be all the rage…if you choose to share.

Ingredients for the Apple Filling

  • 7 large honeycrisp apples (peeled)

  • 1/4 cup granulated sugar

  • 1/4 cup brown sugar

  • 1/4 cup spiced apple cider

  • 1 1/2 teaspoons of cinnamon (I mostly eye it)

Ingredients for Crumble/Crisp Topping

  • 1 1/2 self-rising flour

  • 1/2 granulated sugar

  • 1 teaspoon coarse kosher salt

  • 12 tablespoons unsalted butter (you’ll want it to be room temperature)

Directions

  • Preheat the oven to 375.
  • Take the peeled sliced apples (I cut some in 1/2 inch slices and some in 1/4 inch slices), 1/4 cup of the granulated sugar and the 1/4 cup of brown sugar and evenly coat the apples with both. Over medium heat, cook the apples for a couple of minutes until the sugars dissolve. Remove from heat.
  • In a large mixing bowl, toss the apple slices with the apple cider and cinnamon. I usually add about a tablespoon more of sugar to the mixture. Make sure all the slices are coated in the mixture. Transfer the apples to a baking dish. I use my 9×12 glass baking dish but you can also use ceramic.
  • In a separate mixing bowl, combine the flour, remaining sugar, salt and cubed buttered. Mix and blend with either a pie blender or two forks until small crumbles form. Pat the topping over the apples.
  • Bake the apple crumble for at least 50 minutes (I usually bake an hour) until the top is golden brown and bubbly. If you want the top to be a little more brown, you can broil it but you must watch it closely as to not burn- only a minute or two. Let stand for 20 minutes before serving. Top it off with caramel or vanilla ice cream if desired.
